Hot in Maine

August 3, 2018 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

This book was given to me in a “swag bag” from some event or other that I participated in recently.  I initially pooh-poohed the book away because I generally don’t read romance novels.  But I found myself needing an easy, mindless read to pass the time on a long flight, so I decided to give this one a try.  This is not my preferred genre, so maybe my expectations were particularly low, but I found the book better than I expected.  I did not love […]

Classic Worth Revisiting

August 3, 2018 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

I recently read this as a read-aloud book with my 10 year old son.  He found it at the library and thought it looked interesting, but found that the language was a bit confusing, so we decided to do it as a read aloud, so that we could stop and discuss whatever he did not understand. Amina’s Voice is a book for 8-12 year olds about a Muslim-American girl who just started 6th grade. Her best friend, a Korean immigrant, […]

January 12, 2018 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

This is the book that I wish I had written. In fact, many of my friends and family did tell me that I should write it, but I was too slow, and Caitlin Brodnick did an amazing job of it instead. Ms. Brodnick learned at age 21 that she was BRCA positive. At age 28 she opted for prophylactic bilateral mastectomies, as a result of her family history. Ms. Brodnick spent some years engaging in self-destructive behavior in a effort to ignore her diagnosis.  She did […]
