Julie's Reviews:

Glad I’m Not In Gilead

The odds are good that you’ve already read this book, so I don’t really need to tell you what it’s about.  But on the off-chance that you haven’t even heard of it, let’s just say that it’s a page from a future nightmare, a dystopian society where a woman’s role is either a housekeeper, a wife, or a handmaid.  Women in this world don’t have jobs outside the house, and have no money of their own.  If the woman is the wife of a wealthy man, […]

Confusing Isn’t Always Better

Urban Fantasy is probably my favorite genre.  I love the blend of modern settings and magical energies.  It’s also a great genre because it’s full of kick-ass female characters.  One of my favorite series was The Hollows by Kim Harrison.  Unlike some writers who just keep publishing books until the characters you once loved become gross caricatures of themselves (looking at you Laurell K), Harrison knew when it was time to end the series and she wrote the last book a few years ago.  Having […]

I initially was pleased to read The Others series by Anne Bishop, particularly starting with Written In Red, the first book of the series. I’ve read some of her other fiction, the first few books of the Black Jewels series, which I would not recommend at all.  A few people told me, yeah those books are terrible, but the Others books are great. The Others takes place in a world that is sort of like our own, but there are elementals and powerful forces of […]

Before the Killer Tomatoes Attacked

March 26, 2017 by Julie Leave a Comment

I’m a huge reader of well-written urban fantasy series, the ones that have strong heroines whose magical powers help them navigate their worlds that are almost like ours except the supernatural is real. The Hollows series by Kim Harrison is a great example of that.  The main character, Rachel, is a badass female witch who fights against elves, demons, and vampires, with her cool sidekick pixy and vampire bff Ivy.  I was kind of sad when the Hollows series ended except it did seem like […]
