I read to escape and to be entertained for awhile. My main choice is historical romance, with a side of mystery from time to time. I don't want any part of dystopian books, or depressing reality tales - there is quite enough of that in the news these days! I'm a social media failure - I don't tweet, Instagram, Tumblr or Facebook - who has the time when there's books to read?

Diamonds and death

January 10, 2019 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is book six in the Dr. Thomas Silkstone Mysteries, which are the exploits of an American anatomist in 18th century London.  I had read book two last year, and somehow didn’t realize this one was four books after that already.  Still, I was able to pick up the threads of the series without too much effort again. It begins with a duel between Thomas and another man, over the affections of Lady Lydia Farrell, whom Thomas hopes to marry.  She has been through some […]

Holmes would not be amused

The first in the charming, evocative, and sharply plotted Victorian crime series that is “a deft blend of accuracy and frivolity, sure to please lovers of historical mysteries.” (Shelf Awareness) So this is book one in the Gower Street Detectives, and based on the above blurb I thought it would be right up my alley.  It’s set in Victorian England, telling the tale of of a young woman who has arrived to stay with her guardian after the death of her father.  March Middleton, the […]

It’s a bloody thing, being a vampire

July 30, 2018 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

Coldtown was dangerous, Tana knew. A glamorous cage, a prison for the damned and anyone who wanted to party with them. So imagine you wake up from a party to find you are seemingly the only one alive in the house – all your friends are dead, drained of blood by vampires.  This is how this book begins – with Tana freaking out over the discovery, finally finding her ex-boyfriend Aiden still alive but infected, along with a mysterious stranger.  They manage to escape, just […]

Faerie court intrigue at its finest

June 26, 2018 by Mikki Blu 4 Comments

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. This book by Holly Black is the first in a new YA series, The Folk of the Air, set in the treacherous High Court of Faerie.  I haven’t read anything by Ms Black previously, but I’ve been in a reading slump for a few months and this book looked promising when I saw it in the hot titles section at the library.  The first […]
