The Liar’s Club (1995) a childhood memoir by Mary Karr, is another book on my list of 50 Books Every Woman Should Read Before She Turns 40. Unfortunately for me, the first blurb on Amazon, from Oprah.com, says that this book is “wickedly funny and almost movingly illuminating.” The next paragraph states, “The New York Times bestselling, hilarious tale of Mary Karr’s hardscrabble Texas childhood.” With this kind of [mis]information, I was imagining a lighthearted comedy, so I eagerly put it on my Kindle to read while on […]

Eddie Izzard is Just as Delightful in Text
I have loved Eddie Izzard since Definite Article, and Dress to Kill is my favorite stand-up special of all time. One could say that isn’t saying much since I don’t really listen to or watch a lot of stand-up, but that just means it’s one of the rare specials that actually made me enjoy stand-up, right up there with Paul F. I’d already powered my way through some terrible books this year, and the world is just too crappy a place right now, so I gave myself permission […]

I think most of us know Retta from Parks and Rec, where she played Donna Meagle and was part of the TREAT YO SELF phenomenon of 2011. I also knew she loved the LA Kings and Hamilton, but really didn’t know much else about her before listening to her audiobook. Now I know a lot about her…but I still don’t really feel like I know her. RETTA, WHO ARE YOU? You love handbags. You love your hardworking, immigrant parents. You love Duke University. You are […]
