I lack the deep well of literary understanding

November 27, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Yup, this is another one where my lack of in-depth knowledge on the source topic definitely left me stranded. Some post-read googling has taught me a bit about Kathy Acker, but oh man am I still so confused. She was an experimental novelist and post-modern writer, per Wikipedia, who died in the 1990s – but this book is supposedly about her/from her perspective and is set in 2017. Which is I guess experimental in its own right and therefore lives up to her legacy? Or […]

So many feels – CBR10Bingo: So Popular! *Bingo*

November 27, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Elaine Lui of Lainey Gossip has been figuratively yelling at me since 2013 to read Eleanor & Park.  She brings it up regularly when talking about other YA books.  It was a book I kept meaning to get around to reading but just never put in the effort of getting my hands on a copy.  When I realized it was an option for the So Popular! bingo square, it seemed fated that I would finally read Eleanor & Par,k and complete my second bingo in the process. I could not […]

The Book Was Better (but the film was still excellent)

November 27, 2018 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

cbr10bingo The Book Was Better The novel Mudbound was a Pen America Literary Award winner and was turned into an award winning film starring Mary J. Blige. It’s a powerful and tragic story about land, love, friendship and racism in post-WWII Mississippi, told from multiple points of view. Both the novel and the film are excellent, but I must give the nod to the original novel as being better. The novel (and film) open with brothers Henry and Jamie McAllen burying their Pap while Henry’s […]

Zombies and the Final Girl and … Cuba?

November 27, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

I flagged this book as “mystery” though it really pulls quite heavily from horror in ways that I don’t have enough appreciation of the genre to fully recognize or explain. The Third Hotel also reminded me a bit of Tangerine, largely in its unsatisfying plot and refusal to use quotation marks when writing dialogue, which I find to be incredibly infuriating. Overall, this was a book I read to finish, not to enjoy. So now to figure out how to draw 250 words out of that. Our […]
