I was pleasantly surprised by Monica McCarty’s Campbell trilogy, which includes Highland Warrior (#1), Highland Outlaw (#2), and Highland Scoundrel (#3). They’re all good, steamy romances with a generous helping of clan battles, alliances, betrayals, and feuds that are all actually based on historical events. I personally preferred the second and third books in the series to the first, not because of a marked increase in overall quality, but because I liked the heroines better. Each of the alpha male heroes were dreamy in their […]
HUZZAH!
This book has EVERYTHING. There is simply no other author doing what Courtney Milan is doing. She wears her heart and her mind on her sleeve, and in doing so, my heart and mind are engaged to their fullest capacity when devouring her stories. The amount of romantic passion, intellectual rigor, and political zeal that she includes in her characterization is astounding, and even more so because as overbearing as any one of these can be in less skilled hands, in her texts the complement […]
Ugh (a review in Drag Race gifs)
No Rest for the Wicked was almost offensively boring, and when it wasn’t boring, it was offensive. It also has 4.3 stars on Goodreads. I don’t think this book bothers to take itself seriously, so I won’t give it a serious review. Kresley Cole essentially plagiarizes herself with every novel, so I see no problem with taking plagiarism to its logical end and relying mostly on the work of others to get my point across here. I’m going with RuPaul and her girls as my muses […]
A romance that felt made for me
This book was stunning. Courtney Milan’s characterization and gender politics have always been several cuts above much of what is present in the genre, but here she addresses head-on the inequality of opportunity for 19 century women and details the psychological effects of internalizing the message, both overt and more subtle, that you can’t. Violet Waterfield, the Countess of Cambury, is a brilliant scientist. She’s also a woman. Her gender has done her no favors: her groundbreaking discoveries on reproduction and inheritance of traits are known […]
