Probably my least favorite of these books.

I liked this, I did. But the first half was just an extended Holmes story (a pretty good one!), while the second half was basically pointless. I don’t think this should have been a full length novel. The content of the story just doesn’t justify it. The Valley of Fear was published in full in 1915 (after being serialized in The Strand of course), so by this point, Conan Doyle had been writing the character for almost thirty years. (This was also around the time […]

“Holmes,” I cried. “Is it really you?”

While gathering my thoughts to start writing this review, I kept getting the feeling that this was my favorite of the Holmes story collections so far. With this feeling in mind, I moseyed on over to Goodreads to look at my status updates to try to collect evidence to back it up (I rate and do mini-reviews for every story), whereupon I found to my surprise that my reaction to most of the stories was just good, not great. It’s a solid story collection! However, only two out […]

Want to fall in love with Trevor Noah?

I’d read good things about this book for a little while but I assumed it was just another comedian celebrity writing a book to make some money.  Since I usually spend money on those exact books, I bought this with one of my first Audible credits.  I’ve always thought that comedians who read their own books are the very best of narrators so it seemed like a safe pick.  I’d watched the Daily Show with Trevor a few times.  A little less often than I […]

I do love Tessa Dare, first off. I need to say that right away. Also, that as usual, I’ve had a great time listening to a book of hers. They are always tongue in cheek, silly, and completely anachronistic, and sweet. BUT. There’s this one thing she does that she’s done in her last three published books, and I’ve had enough of it. This book is about Alexandre Mountbatten, who we met last book as Emma’s friend who sets rich people’s clocks to Greenwich Mean […]
