This book is pretty far outside of my comfort zone because I’ve been trying to experience new genres this year, but I think Kushiel’s Dart may have been the farthest I’ll delve into high fantasy. I did enjoy large parts of it, but I probably won’t be reading the sequels. Committing my time to this 901 page brick filled my epic fantasy quota for a few years. No helpless damsels in distress here
I haven’t read much fantasy, but a friend gave it rave reviews so I tried this one and ended up loving it. Uprooted was such a satisfying thrill of a read. I don’t want to go into much detail about the plot because it’ll ruin the twists and turns, but here’s the basic premise. The world of Uprooted is based on an ancient fictional Poland and is vaguely reminiscent of old Eastern European fairy tales (including the famous Baba Yaga). There are several villages in […]
A Gentleman Bastard Is Still A Bastard
In a nutshell this is a fantastic, fun ride. It has all the elements of a great modern fantasy: excellent characters, awesome world-building, and a fast-paced, well timed plot that keeps you interested. A lot of Amazon reviewers are comparing Scott Lynch to Mark Lawrence and Patrick Rothfuss, and as a reader of all 3 authors, I feel that Lynch’s Locke and Company are NOTHING like Jorg or Kvothe. While Jorg is a downright bastard (see Kaykay’s Cannonball 6 review) and Kvothe is cocky (see […]
A Devilishly Twisted Dark Fantasy Thriller
‘Horns’ is the story of a young man who awakens one morning with horns growing out of his head. This man, Ig Perrish, is thought to have killed his girlfriend the year before. The horns seem to have a weird effect on the people he speaks to. He keeps being asked for permission from the people he talks to, to allow them to act out dark desires.First off this is a brilliant story, powerful and thought-provoking. It’s the kind of book that affects your mood […]
