Satisfying Conclusion to a Comfort Read

August 3, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

These two books are the concluding books of Emma Newman’s Split World series. I read All Good Things before A Little Knowledge because I mistakenly thought that I’d already read the fourth book. Oops. I like this series a lot, but the fact that I could pick up All Good Things and not be lost at all kind of highlights one of the issues I have with it, which is that it is needlessly drawn out. The side stories that happened in A Little Knowledge […]

If the mysteries of Iris and Lavandula are not revealed, we have a problem

This is a good series. I like the world set up and I like most of the characters. And there’s one more, soon to be released volume to complete (I hope) the various narrative threads. The Split Worlds series is set in world where everyday normalcy exists, and is called Mundanus. 3.5 stars really. I was expecting a full novel but this is either a novella or a short YA book. The set up is pretty intriguing. In 1850 London, magic exists and those who have the talent are highly sought after. So much so that if/when talent is reported the Royal Society of Esoteric Arts shows up to check things out. IF the report is false, the maker is punished. If it’s accurate, the talented person is taken from their family for training. Once educated […]

Dickensian Gaslamp Fantasy

March 17, 2017 by melanir 1 Comment

I enjoyed Emma Newman’s Split World series quite a bit, so I was excited when I heard that she had a new series started. Brother’s Ruin is the start to the series, and the second book will also come out sometime this year, I’m really excited. I enjoyed Brother’s Ruin a lot, and I look forward to the next one. The book is set smack dab in alternate 1850s England, an alternate world where magic users exist. Unfortunately, the Royal Society of the Esoteric Arts […]
