Finally tackling a CBR book exchange book. #CBRBingo

October 29, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

Really not sure why I waited three years in between reading books one and two. Especially since I’ve been on a Sherlock Holmes kick since January 2017 (still going strong!). And especially since MsWas was kind enough to send me books two, three, and four in the CBR Book Exchange that year. They’ve just been sitting here waiting for me! I think I kind of forgot why I liked the first book so much after I read it, and it wasn’t the mystery, or even the appearance […]

#CBR10Bingo: AlabamaPink – The Dud Avocado (First bingo!)

October 16, 2018 by Malin 2 Comments

#CBR10Bingo: AlabamaPink Sally Jay Gorce is a young woman of independent means, thanks to the benevolence of a rich uncle. He’s given her enough money to live comfortably abroad for two whole years, no strings attached, as long as she comes back and tells him about her adventures at the end of the two years. Not needing to hold down a job or really do anything at all for the money, means Sally Jay spends her time flitting about Paris, taking a lover, drinking and […]

Read for CBR10Bingo: Book was better. The movie is one of my all-time favorites. This is my first time reading the novel. I’ve read five James Ellroy books in the last few months so if you want my thoughts on my personal evolution towards his works, check past reviews. Having read the tail end of his work and the beginning of what made him popular, I can say with confidence this is the best book he’s written. It’s the perfect merger of his style and […]

James Ellroy But Condensed And More Entertaining

October 9, 2018 by Jake 1 Comment

While I enjoy her recent work, which is usually set in the present day, I wish Megan Abbott had written more books with settings in 40s and 50s LA and Vegas. She was really onto something. I suppose comparisons to James Ellroy’s The Black Dahlia are inevitable with this one. Like Ellroy’s work, it’s a murder mystery based on a true murder of a woman working the fringes of Hollywood. But unlike Ellroy, who likes to muse about social affairs and masculinity, this is a straight-up whodunnit. […]
