Thar be dragons

[Sidenote: This book is only $1.99 right now!] I always love it when a fun book falls on a cannonball milestone. Although, I have been having a pretty good reading year in terms of quality, so maybe not too surprising. I heard of this book when it first came out in 2017 and I was fairly sure I was going to love it, so I was saving it as a comfort read during a bad week. 3: The Making of Jane Austen

If you have ever read any of my CBR Reviews the last several years, you know that Jane Austen is my literary ride or die. I don’t typically read Jane Austen fanfic (with the marvelous exception of Longbourne), but I *do* read a lot of scholarship and intellectual thinkpieces that are not mansplaining Austen to wimminfolk. I was super excited when I saw this at my local bookstore. One of my all-time favorite classics, modernized and gender-swapped, set at Christmas, and with a cute cover. This was going to be great. SPOILER: THIS WAS NOT GREAT. This was absolutely awful. The worst. The writing was terrible and amateurish. The plot points were forced, like they were simply following a checklist of things that Jane Austen originally wrote. Every single character was a horrible human being that I never wanted to know. […]

I take no leave of you and send no compliments to your mother

Oh dear, where to start with this one. I wanted to like it, I really did! But ultimately this book was such a let down. It reeled me in by professing to be a contemporary, gender swapped version of Pride and Prejudice. And on the surface, it is. Darcy Fitzwilliam is 29 and works in New York City as a partner in the financial district. She has no friends, no romantic life, but buckets of money. When her mom has a heart attack, she rushes […]
