Comfy with Puns and Magic Stuff

January 22, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Myth-Fits really reminded me of Jasper Fford’s YA series about a magic-user employment agency (The Last Dragon Slayer), although I don’t know which one was actually published first. The other big thing I noticed was that jumping into a series not in order (again- although this time, I was already aware before I started) is not terribly problematic. There are certainly references and nuances I know I didn’t understand, but overall I could follow things pretty well. The only thing I don’t know is what […]

Not as great as the first one, but still a fun read

January 20, 2017 by Malin 3 Comments

Disclaimer! I was granted an ARC copy of this through NetGalley. That has in no way influenced my review. Spoiler warning! This is the second book in The Kingmaker Chronicles and as such this review may contain mild spoilers both for the first book in the series, A Promise of Fire and for the beginning of this book. If you’re new to the series, start with book one. If you like going in not knowing anything, come back and read this review once you’ve finished […]

Simon’s house is caving in and falling down all at the same time. He’s lost his job, and there’s no money for repairs. His carny sister and her copiously tattooed carny boyfriend show up for a visit. He is dating the one girl he’s not supposed to date. Oh, and his mom committed suicide when Simon was a child, and his dad is gone, too. Luckily a really weird book shows up just in time to distract him from the everything going wrong in his […]

An Unclear Circus Farewell

I have to admit, the timing here is almost ironic. I finish this book just when Ringling Brothers announces their closure. Anyways, Night Circus has a lot going for it. An interesting premise, mystery, magic, and a great cast of characters in an intriguing setting. The language is also unusually detailed, which matches well with the mysterious artsy tone. I should have loved this, but I only liked it. I had 3 main problems with Night Circus. First and foremost, I hate present tense narrative, […]
