Well I tell you what, this book. It was just unpleasant. I would not have picked this up if it weren’t for bingo, and none of the other choices looked at all appealing. I thought, well if you pick that one at least you won’t be bored! And that was true. Rick Morton is a social affairs writer for The Australian, and 100 Years of Dirt is both his memoir and his commentary of class and disadvantage in Australian society. It’s a very tricky line he’s had to balance himself on; this book could have all too easily turned self-indulgent. Sort of does what it says on the tin. Worth checking out, anyway, if it sound interesting to you!
I liked this overall, but had a hard time reading it, and it wasn’t what I was expecting. Abby Norman dropped out of college due to debilitating pain she started experiencing one day, and which doctors minimized for years before she finally was semi-diagnosed with Endometriosis (among other things). The title and synopsis of this book makes it seem like more of a book about the relationship between women and doctors, but really this is a memoir that mostly focuses on Abby’s medical history, and […]
