In Which I Give Up on Penny Reid

March 16, 2018 by Mrs. Julien 2 Comments

Kissing Tolstoy was awful and silly. I loathed its puerile story and nonsensical plotting, so, Penny Reid: YOU WIN! I am giving up on anything your name is on except MAYBE a Winston Brothers book, and even then it had better not cost me any money. Again and again her books with younger leads have problematic elements, and while it is classified as a “new adult” romance, only one character in Kissing Tolstoy is actually a recent grown up. The heroine, Anna, is a university student and the hero is her professor. […]

First DNF of 2017 – Release the Doves!

January 22, 2017 by Mrs. Julien 2 Comments

I still, despite all the inconsistencies, go to online reviews to help choose books to read. Thin Love was strongly recommended, cheap, and had the added appeal of a lead character who was a person of colour which is always welcome. Unfortunately, much of the romance between Keira and Kona is centered around the kind of relationship chaos that passes for passion with teenagers and in badly written novels, and resulted in it being my first DNF (did not finish) novel of the year. I […]

Tuck’s Perfection Everlasting

November 4, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 3 Comments

In the fourth, but hopefully not final, book in Elle Kennedy’s enjoyable Off Campus contemporary new adult romance  series, another university student hockey player and lovely young woman find a future in each other as they move inexorably towards adult lives. Sabrina James has been surviving on ambition, overwork, and very little sleep as she drives herself through her final undergrad year. Determined to make a better life for herself and gain distance from her grinding family life, she is going to go to law […]

Online Reviews Are Unreliable, As If More Proof Were Needed

November 3, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 5 Comments

Cristin Harber’s Sweet Girl is a prequel to her Titan series and its raison d’être is setting up a reunion plot in subsequent entries. Those books will feature a CIA operative and a black ops team member. They are introduced as university students in this contemporary new adult romance, but don’t be fooled. Sweet Girl is the opposite of all those tough-as-nails professions impy. I plan to spoil the story below. From Amazon: Nicola Hart grew up under the heels of her older brother and his sexy […]
