40 stories for 40 years.

December 28, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

What a fun ode to one of my favorite movies. Seriously, who came up with this idea? It’s great. For the fortieth anniversary of Star Wars (now ponderously titled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope), forty authors who are Star Wars- or nerd-adjacent take side or peripheral characters from the original film and write short stories from their perspectives. These stories are all told in chronological order, from the death of the captain of the Tantive IV all the way to the awards ceremony at the end of the […]

Comfort re-read #2.

December 28, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Another comfort re-read. I’m beginning to sense a pattern here. I read the hardcover this time, but weirdly, I still heard the audiobook narrator’s voice in my head the whole time. I listened to that back in 2014, so I guess he was just a super memorable narrator. Thankfully, I did NOT have Matt Damon in my head in any form. Are you happy with your life?

December 28, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

Jason Dessen is living a good life. He has a decent job, a wife he loves, and a son in a little brownstone in Chicago. Sure there’s choices that he made in the past, choices that he wonders about, but for the most part he is happy. “As long as I’m with you, I know exactly who I am.” One day, coming home from a bar he’s almost hit by a car. And then he’s kidnapped. He doesn’t know why or where, he’s knocked out […]

Ending the year with more excellent Sci Fi

December 21, 2017 by ElCicco 1 Comment

From riverssolomon.com Rivers Solomon is a dyke, a Trekkie, a wannabe cyborg queen, a trash princex, a communist, a butch, a femme, a feminist, a she-beast, a rootworker, a mother, a daughter, a diabetic, and a refugee of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. They write about life in the margins, where they are firmly at home.  This novel is published by Akashic Books (on Twitter @AkashicBooks) which describes itself as an “indie publisher dedicated to reverse gentrification of the literary world.” An Unkindness of Ghosts has been […]
