I just can’t quit you, Lauren Oliver.

January 7, 2019 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

Lauren Oliver is sort of my Cannonball nemesis. I adored her first book, Before I Fall, but have been disappointed ever since, and my disappointment is somewhat well documented. I disliked her Delirium trilogy (yet kept reading). I didn’t care for Rooms, and Panic was just ok. But for seem reason, I just can’t quit her. And I know, I have no one to blame but myself, really. Lauren Oliver owes me nothing. But still. I want more. I know that someday she’ll write something […]

“Not a wind, not even a high, exactly, but an elevation. A sense that you had gone beyond yourself and could go farther still.”

The latest “book” from Uncle Stevie leaves me a little confused, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Elevation is a short book, shorter than many of the “short stories” that King has famously published over the years — definitely shorter than The Mist, or Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, or The Running Man. I’m not quite sure why this was released as a stand-alone novel. I think it would be better suited as the featured story in a new collection. But I’m not […]

There’s a lot to admire in Drew Magary’s debut novel, The Postmortal. The plot is fascinating: what if, this year, scientists could discover the cure for aging? What if you could get a series of shots that would guarantee that you would never age a day — and would live for as long as you wanted, unless you died from a disease or an accident or an act of violence? Would you do it? If you did, what would it change about the way you […]

“Love is scary: it changes; it can go away. That’s part of the risk.”

My daughter is 14, and all of sudden this year I couldn’t go 6 seconds without hearing the words “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” I think she watched it on Netflix 50 times with her friends. I watched it, too. It was adorable. And I wanted to know more about Lara Jean and Peter, so off to the library I went, picking up all three volumes of their saga. At this point, pretty much everyone knows the story: Lara Jean is half-Korean, and […]
