Forgive me, I did not like this

I had problems with this book, honestly. I know it was tackling a difficult subject. I know that I am not the one to be evaluating and judging the well-being of suicidal teens, and the protagonist of this book is literally a boy planning to commit suicide, and he wants to take some people with him. Leonard’s confessional is all cynicism, antipathy, and naive self-centeredness, and right out of the gate his corrosive rationalizations for wanting to kill his classmate and himself are brashly laid […]

End of Watch

End of Watch.  Once again, I’m sorry to say that there’s not much good to be said about this one.  It’s a real downer, and I waited several weeks after I read it to write this review, because I didn’t want to ruin it for anyone.  Problem is, I also don’t want to have to reread it, and unlike some other books, my head doesn’t want to hold on to it.  My major issues were how irritating it was that King returned to drugging people […]

I later read “About a Boy” and enjoyed that as well, so this is my third Hornby, and I liked it just as much as the first two. The subject matter could be a bit of a downer, especially for this time of year, but it really just depends on your perspective. I have […]

They broke the mold after Dumas wrote “The Count of Monte Cristo.” There will never be a revenge plot as ambitious, as smooth, as Rube Goldbergian, as violent, as tense, or as passionate as this. This is the Ur Revenge Plot. I devoured this book. Inhaled it. And it’s partly because my brain melted a bit after the election, and then I was doggedly rebuilding my spirits with Solnit’s “Hope in the Dark” (TBR) (GET OFF MY BACK), and then it was Thanksgiving, and I […]
