London Calling

June 24, 2016 by kdm 6 Comments

I finally (finally) got around to reading the debut mystery novel of “Robert Galbraith”, now famously a pseudonym adopted by goddess divine J.K. Rowling.  The Cuckoo’s Calling, the first entry in the Cormoran Strike series, was engrossing and wonderful, and I’m pretty much an idiot for waiting this long.   The book starts with a brief prologue, with police making their way through a horde of journalists to the body of an apparent suicide victim; a famous and beautiful woman who has seemingly jumped from […]

Rowling and mysteries are a perfect fit

3.5 stars. This time of year usually has me craving mysteries and I’d been meaning to get to J.K. Rowling’s pseudonymous series. The Cormoran Strike series written under the name of Robert Galbraith centers on ex-military policeman Strike and his new assistant/secretary, Robin. They’re called on to investigate the mysterious death of ultra famous supermodel, Lula Landry. Her death was officially ruled a suicide by the police months ago, but many of her friends and family just can’t believe she would choose to end her […]

I had every intention of reviewing The Cuckoo’s Calling as if I didn’t know that it was written by J.K. Rowling. But, I can’t. I do know, and more than that the book’s true authorship shows on the page. The same things that made me love Rowling’s writing in the Harry Potter series are on display here, as are some of her trademark faults. But first, let’s talk about Cormoran Strike(because he’s a pretty great character). The Cuckoo’s Calling opens with the suicide of model […]

More impressive work from Rowling

I am one of the few people who adored The Casual Vacancy, JK Rowling’s long awaited and highly criticized follow-up to the series that made her a household name. I found it to be an exceptionally smart, if slow, character study; a story that took forever to capture my attention, but that I wound up deeply invested in. The Cuckoo’s Calling, Rowling’s next attempt (under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith), was similarly paced, but seems to have more broad appeal than The Casual Vacancy. The Cuckoo’s Calling is a fantastic read, starring […]
