“And Benny might have been clueless about a lot of things, but about one thing he was absolutely right: Your only hope was to Be There…”

This was a weird mystery, but not in the way I like my weird. The book is about a pair of mismatched teen detectives, Benny and Virginia, who try to find the truth when a popular cheerleader jumps off a bridge during a football game. It’s so hard to talk about this book. There were moments where I liked it, then some weird thing would happen and it just put me off it. It’s like a nice cookie with raisins sprinkled throughout. Except, here the […]

I’d rather spend one minute holding you than the rest of my life knowing that I never could

I was wary of reading another YA romance-du-jour, as I find that some of them are just too cliché, though this could be a side-effect of not being in the target age demographic.  But I read so many absolutely glowing reviews for the movie adaptation of Everything, Everything that I had to check out the book first. The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

She’s up all night for good fun….she’s up all night to finish the girl with all the gifts

“If the road to knowledge was paved with dead children she’d still walk it” I read this book in two days. I stayed up at night, survived work all bleary eyed and then went home to read more. This book is tense, y’all. It opens with Melanie a smart girl, a girl dreaming about Greek mythology. She likes Pandora. She likes the name and the box and the hope that is unleashed with the evil. “And then like Pandora, opening the great big box of […]

We are not all heroes

June 14, 2017 by FyreHaar Leave a Comment

I was inspired to write this review by this tweet. YA is an interesting genre. Nix’s previous books (which I adore) have given us a very typical YA heroines. They are morally clear, they have self doubt which they work through, and they are generally good. In Clariel – which a lot of Nix fans didn’t like – we don’t get that. Clariel is a prequel to Sabriel – Nix’s first “Old Kingdom” book.  It’s set a couple of hundred years in the past. Clariel […]
