If by “Legend” you mean “won’t be remembered next week,” sure.

August 25, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 10 Comments

There were two big problems with my experience reading Legend: first, I should have read it five years ago; second, I listened to the audiobook, which was so perfunctorily narrated that the cheesy-ness of the line reading just emphasized how pedestrian the prose and dialogue are. I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks, but I had hoped to make more of a habit of it since my current job is well-suited for listening to them while I work. Something a bit familiar about this one…

August 17, 2016 by maydays 4 Comments

It’s time for the post-vacation reviews.  I read (almost) 4 books and the details are getting a bit hazy a few days after my return. This was the first of the week and the least memorable for me. Darrow lives on Mars as a Red, the lowest in the intergalactic caste system.  He’s a young married miner, special amongst his people, but oppressed by the powers that be.  A tragedy propels him out of his subterranean bubble and into the world of the upper castes, […]

I was sufficiently intrigued, and also by the news of a recent movie adaptation. You know me—read book first, then watch movie. So I read this book in an evening, while The Chancellor was under an enormous time crunch to get his final grades in. I decided to stay up and be supportive, […]

What’s my niche again?

June 27, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

I’d recently celebrated discovering my romance niche–dystopian romance.  A Google search led me to some recommendations for Maddy Barone’s “After the Crash” series, so I plunked down the $0.00 to give it a try. What.the.hell. Carla survived a plane crash, but when she and another woman walk to find help they find themselves offered as prizes in a “Bride Fight” because the plane actually crashed 50 years into the future after nuclear war and meteors destroyed the planet which somehow means there are no women.  So […]
