This book retains TLo’s trademark snark but dispenses with the knowledgeable fashion analysis and commentary that lift their site into the stratosphere, far and away above the “WHO WORE IT BEST?” columns in the likes of People and Us. Instead, they train their sights on the celebrity machine, and carefully explain the care and feeding of a typical celeb — how he or she becomes famous, behaves while famous, and tenaciously clings to fame. The result is a fitfully entertaining screed, devoid of the very things that make their site unique.
There’s cheese with my whine here.
I had forgotten they had a book coming. I’m sad to hear it doesn’t live up to its potential, but great review! How on earth did you choose which Miss Universe outfit to end on? Soooo many options!
Thanks, Bothari43! (A Vorkosigan fan, I’m guessing?) I was bummed too, but as I said, it does have its moments. As for choosing a Miss Universe outfit…basically random selection. There really are no WRONG choices there, are there? It’s like hallucinating the United Nations on the beach or something…
