Competitive Non-Fiction attempts to read some New Adult Fiction

March 23, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

Trigger Warning: these books include descriptions of violence, incest, coerced sexual situations, rape and public perception of rape. If such discussions are upsetting to you, please avoid this review, and absolutely avoid the novels.

I’ve tried to write the reviews for each of these book separately, but it seems borderline impossible.  The problem is that they are essentially a variation on the same plot, so I just going to lump them into one.

I decided to try a few New Adult books after reading Fangirl and Raindow Rowell’s other work in an attempt to fill that void you get after reading a really good book. Of course, this didn’t work. Fangirl is miles above and beyond any of the other New Adult that I’ve read, in writing, character development, and plotting. Still, there were good things here, and given my refusal to avoid any particular type of book based on genre or other such snobbery, I’m glad that I took the leap and tried a few different New Adult novels to see what the genre has to offer. And it actually does have some things to offer people who are striking out on their own and starting to wrestle with challenges well beyond those dealt with in other books aimed at the younger demographic.
