Twisted Sisters

March 14, 2014 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I love Jen Lancaster; she was really my first introduction into memoirs. I cannot say enough good things about her memoirs, she is funny, self deprecating and very open about her personal life.

Unfortunately, in the past few years, Jen has taken an interest in writing fiction.

This book is so vapid and ridiculous I don’t know where to begin. How about with the constant reference to the brands she was wearing (there are like 5 references to lululemon)? Or the specific colors her gym shoes are? Lemon yellow/dark shaow-colored Mizuno Wave Rider 15s in case you were dying to find out.

Twisted Sisters is the story of Reagan Bishop who has been a therapist on a TV show that “pushes” contestants to better themselves, when the show is moved to network its retooled into a flashier product and Reagan gets a bit insecure in her abilities to counsel people in this new structure. She is thrown out of her comfort zone by her new friend, a colleague named Deva, and hijinks ensue. She is also the black sheep in her family, focusing on academics and job advancement over finding love.  Her sisters are Geri and (I shit you not) Mary Magdalene, who is referred to as Mary Mac. She has a long standing feud with her younger sister, Geri, over who got to eat the ham sandwich instead of a PB&J when they were little.
I have an older sister; we haven’t always gotten along (although my husband is flummoxed by our incredibly close relationship in present day) but the thought of a decade long feud over something so trivial as a sandwich is ridiculous.

Almost as ridiculous as repairing that relationship through astral projection.

I wanted to like this book, I needed to like this book. Unfortunately, I didn’t and don’t plan to read any more of her fiction in case is dampen by love for her non-fiction…

While Twisted Sisters is a quick, mindless read I would recommend sticking to her memoirs for a proper introduction to the brilliance of Jen Lancaster.

I agree! I love Jen Lancaster. I read her memoirs to my husband who thinks she is funny, creative and interesting, as do I. This twisted sister is terrible. I fell asleep a couple of times through it and it took me nearly a month to finish it. That never happens! Advice from a fan Jen Lancaster, stick to memoirs. I am happy however, I bought this book at the Goodwill for two dollars. I would have been upset if I paid full price. I did purchase The Tao of Martha, full price, will see!
