This trade paperback volume of Saga collects issues 13-18. It’s an ongoing series, and you really should be starting at the beginning. It’s also the best comic book/graphic novel series I’ve read in probably a decade, so if you haven’t read it, run to your nearest comics shop and come back when you’ve caught up. Also, it goes without saying that there may be spoilers here for earlier in the series.
Marko’s mother has decided to join her son and his new family on their quest to find D. Oswald Heist. Meanwhile, a pair of tabloid journalists are trying to get to figure out exactly what is the story with Marko and Alana. Could two enemy combatants actually have deserted, got married and had a child? There are, however, forces who aren’t all that excited about the story being published and want them to stop. The Will, Cat, Gwendolyn and the slave girl they rescued are stuck on an idyllic alien planet while waiting for their spaceship to be repaired. Gwen is impatient to catch up to their targets, but the Will seems quite content to stay on the new planet. He doesn’t seem to realise that he’s seeing impossible things and that listening to the wrong influences could put them all in terrible danger.
Full review on my blog.
For what it’s worth your initial reviews hooked me in and I pre-ordered this ages ago :) As you mentioned – it’s a delight: great story, characters, and each frame is worthy of a spot on the wall.
I will say that I was bummed that the quality and size of my book was not on par with the first 2. Meaning that the book itself got notably smaller and the paper is thinner. The size bothered me simply because the artwork is so fantastic.
This however is a quibble and should in no way detract anybody from jumping into this series (ideally with Volume I) because it’s a gorgeous read!
Oh, that’s strange. As far as I can tell, our volume 3 is the same size and quality as the other two. Maybe there is some difference in the published editions in the US versus Europe?
My main gripe now is that there’s such a long wait between volumes, and graphic novels are so much faster to read than big books.
I fully plan on reading this, but I want to wait until there’s more of it to read. Reading Y: The Last Man all the way through (both times) was one of the best reading experiences. I sort of want to do the same thing with this.
Oh, there is no way I can wait until it’s all finished. I’m actually dreading the end, because Brian K. Vaughan is NOT good at them. The first three volumes of Saga has gone some way to making me forgive him for the end of Y: the Last Man, but if he messes up the end here, or kills another major character that I care about in the same pointless and infuriating way as he did last time, I will call down dark gods and curse him and his family for generations to come.
