Never Let Me Go

It took me longer then it should to read Never Let Me Go, the writing was so flowery I could only read so much in one sitting without getting drowsy.

Kathy, Ruth and Tommy grew up in England at a boarding school, Hailsham, with no parents, lots of rules and little interaction with the outside world; they are also expected to produce artwork for a mysterious Gallery. After they graduate, they go to the Cottages where they are mixed with students from other schools and they discover how Hailsham isn’t like the other schools. After a falling out with Ruth, Kathy volunteers to begin her service as a “carer” and doesn’t see her old friends for several years.

The story is told in flash backs as Kathy reminiscences about her childhood while being Ruth’s, and then Tommy’s, carer. -10 year old spoiler- but Kathy, Tommy and Ruth are clones bred by science to donate their vital organ to real people and eventually “complete” once there aren’t enough organs to sustain their own lives (between 2 and 4 donation).

There is a bit of a love triangle and a search for the truth about their time at Hailsham, but it’s mostly just quiet reflection.
