Will Grayson, will grayson

June 30, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I read Will Grayson, Will Grayson on a road trip with my husband, who asked what the book I was reading was about. I told him, and he responded with “Are you bullsh!tting me? Cause I’m not able to tell…” Honestly, saying the plot of Will Grayson, Will Grayson out loud really does ridiculous.

Will Grayson #1 is your average high school student who alienates his group of friends when he publicly supports his gay friend, Tiny’s, right to play on the football team. Tiny Cooper is a huge, black, out and proud gay man who is writing a musical about his life. He falls in love every week with someone else and is determined to set Will up with his friend Jane, despite Will’s reluctance. This Will Grayson is written by my hero John Green.

Will Grayson #2 is a closeted gay teenager, suffering from depression, who is falling in love with Isaac online only to be crushed by the truth. He meets Will Grayson #1 and Tiny one night which changes the three main characters lives. this will grayson is written in all lower caps by david levithan.

Part of me wished they didn’t use the silly plot device of having the two main characters have the same name, it just took this already silly plot to the next level of twee. There was a good story in there somewhere about being true to yourself and standing up for what you believe in. And while John Green can write usually best friend, Tiny Cooper was kind of self involved and ridiculous for my tastes.

He wrote a musical guys, about his life…
