Imagine, if you will, that the Classical Greek Gods were real and have continued in existence from those BCE times to now and are living in somewhat squalid circumstances in London. Imagine that they are a bit spoiled and out of sorts with the modern world and are forced to live together in a massive but decrepit London mansion for 400 years, gradually fading and losing their power. Imagine that they actually have to get day jobs to pay the bills: Aphrodite as a phone sex worker, Apollo as a very bad TV “psychic”, Artemis as a professional dog walker and Dionysis as a drunken club DJ. Now imagine what happens when two humans stumble into this mess and into a battle of wills between a very bitter Aphrodite and her brother Apollo. Alice and Neil, two very average people, fall afoul of the mess that is the Badly Behaving Gods. Apollo, in a jealous rage, has Alice killed by Zeus and his thunderbolts. Neil must then (with Artemis’ assistance) go to the Underworld, bargain with Hades and become a hero to save his Beloved. Much like the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, but with names that are easier to spell and pronounce and a cheerier outcome.
It’s not Homer, but it will entertain.
I read this a couple years ago. I had exactly the same reaction: silly fluff, but fun.
