Not That Kind of Girl

October 16, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Lena Dunham is the writer, producer, director and star of HBO’s “Girls”- one of the more divisive TV shows on right now. My husband absolutely hates her. However, he absolutely loves me so he bought me her memoir as one of our Anniversary gifts (year one is paper) because despite his protests “Girls” is one of my guilty pleasures.

Lena Dunham is kind of a mess- but for the most part she owns it. She is not relatable in anyway; unless you are an OCD ridden hypochondriac who was raised by wealthy, artistic parents who coddled you throughout your childhood.

The book is broken into 5 sections: Love & Sex, Body, Friendship, Work and Big Picture. She talks candidly about her quest to lose her virginity, her body & mental health issues as well as her career. She speaks vaguely, but fondly, of her boyfriend (the guitarist for fun./ lead singer of the Bleachers) and her relationship with her family. It’s different than the standard memoir written by an actor, there aren’t long chapters about struggling to make it or the crap jobs that eventually led to a big break. Lena’s career has been pretty much her own creation and she received a lot of success early on.

As I mentioned before, Lena Dunham is a pretty polarizing personality. I actually think reading her memoir caused me to like her less. It’s not that the book is poorly written, it’s just causes you to roll your eyes a painful amount and groan- which can be awkward in the work break room.
