I like reading about vampires probably more than most, Twilight notwithstanding, but this series really tested my patience with its obnoxious protagonist Betsey. She is having the worst day at the start of this book. She loses her job, gets into a wreck and wakes up alive in the funeral home. The first thing she notices is that she’s wearing a tacky suit and bad shoes. Not at all like her closet of designer things. She doesn’t really freak out, but instead goes home as if nothing’s wrong. But soon she starts to hate sunlight and human food tastes awful so she calls her sassy bff and new doctor pal she befriended somehow magically after accidentally foiling his suicide attempt. Together the geniuses decide she is a vamp. Turns out a nasty bite she got from homeless man a few days ago but the vamp virus into her system. Now she’s undead AND single. But hey, she got her designer shoes back from her stepmother with a bit of fang scaring.
Two opposing local vamps approach her, one more devilishly handsome than the other (of course), and attempt to have her join their side. Betsey isn’t really into either and especially not the old stinky one who dresses badly. She almost joins up with the arrogant cute one, but he has orgies all the time (as a vampire does), which totally offends her prudish sensibilities. But she can’t stay neutral forever and soon she must pick a side before one of them picks it for her.
Ok I read this book not by choice, but for my book club. The chicklit-esque cover should have been a clue, but I thought it might have some semblance of thrills as the main character is a vamp. Instead, Betsey just moans most of the time because she may or may not be some vampire queen, which totally cramps her style. I suppose this is a light fantasy for more traditional, pure romance lovers. As for me, I need my romance alot darker and more action & fantasy elements please. On the upside, it was a super quick read (even with the groan worthy bits) which gave me time to finish both picks for VF that month.
