I think Agatha Christie had some slight yearning to write a buddy comedy, because she has this kind of team thing going with Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver. Mrs. Oliver is a writer of mystery stories, and she and Poirot seem awfully chummy.
Anyway, Ms. Oliver is at Nasse House, a beautiful estate on a river. She has been invited to write a “Murder Hunt” for the village fete that’s being held at the estate. She has a funny feeling about everything, and invites Poirot to join her. Then, while the Murder Hunt is happening, the girl that was playing the “victim” is actually murdered! Seems like Ariadne’s instincts were right. . . .
Lots of people are staying at the house, plus there were all the people at the fete. Who could have killed an innocent young girl? Was it Sir George, who took over the house with his new money? His dumb but beautiful wife? Someone from her murky past? The previous owner of the house who may have something to hide? It could be anyone.
Of course Poirot uses his little grey cells (and some help from Ariadne) to solve the mystery – all of the mysteries. Yet another entertaining read by Agatha Christie.
