A Never Let Me Go For the Senior Set

December 23, 2014 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

I’ve never been a fan of dystopian YA fiction and I guess the opposite of that would be SA or senior adult fiction with a dystopian twist, which is what The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist would be. The premise of the story caught me a little off guard, but as a Never Let Me Go, senior citizen edition, I was pretty impressed.

When Dorrit Weger moves into the Second Reserve Bank Unit as a permanent resident, she has few expectations beyond having a secure place to live out her final years. At 50, she’s not yet elderly, and is in fact, in quite good health, but as she has never married or had children, and had only mild success as a writer, Dorrit is considered a prime candidate for The Unit, which is open to women 50 and over and men 60 and over.

Gin-soaked, mildly European democratic-socialist popinjay and avid curator of esoteric ephemera. I work in the future. US passport, Netherlands resident, global citizen. My goal this year is to read authors from diverse backgrounds, especially women, and non-western writers, particularly speculative fiction, political analysis and historical memoirs.
