Landline is Rowell’s return to stories about adults. After dealing with the tough issues of young adulthood in her previous work, in Landline, Rowell takes on the complicated and challenging topic of marriage and how people somehow change and stay the same all at once. In Landline, Georgie McCool’s marriage is in trouble. Her husband and the father of her two children, Neal, has been frustrated with Georgie’s inability to balance work and life for some time and when she tells him that she can’t come to his parents’ place for Christmas as planned, he says they’ll just go without her.
