Miss Marple’s Last Case?

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Technically, this was Agatha Christie’s last book, even though it wasn’t the last one she wrote. According to Wikipedia, it was published after her death.

Gwenda Reed comes to England to find a house for her and her husband. She buys a place called Hillside, which feels familiar to her for some reason. She starts renovations, and has a couple of flashback like incidents. She goes to London to visit with family, and meets Miss Marple. They go to see a play, which freaks Gwenda out, she’s had another flashback.

Gwenda tells Miss Marple her story, and Miss Marple figures out that Gwenda had actually lived in the house when she was very little, despite the fact that Gwenda thought she had been born in India and raised in New Zealand. Then the question becomes: did Gwenda witness a murder when she was a little girl?

Gwenda’s husband comes home, and Miss Marple contrives a reason to visit the town. The three of them team up to investigate what may have happened in the house decades ago. They uncover a whole bunch of secrets, and of course put some other people in danger. Another murder? You betcha. Miss Marple figures it all out? Well, duh.

There’s a reason Agatha Christie is such popular author – she writes good stories. Eventually I suppose I’ll make my way through all of them. I should probably keep track of which ones I’ve already read.
