I like Jim Gaffigan. I think he’s funny, his episodes of the Nerdist podcast are fantastic. People I admire on Twitter were raving about this book, which I took as a good sign. I also like food. I love reading cook books, cooking, going out to eat, reading about chefs….I’m not calling myself a foodie, but I do enjoy it. You’d think this would be a natural fit! You’d also be wrong.

I heard about this book from an NPR segment a few days ago, and I have to say that from the tidbit I heard, your review is accurate of my impression of how reading the book would be. In fact, this portion of your review sums ups perfectly why I also tuned to another station early into his segment: “It’s like he’s trying too hard, begging for attention. Look at all my clever one-liners and bon mots! Look at me rip on everything except for meat, junk food, and pizza! Look at how much I hate everything! I just don’t find any of that funny.”
It was so frustrating! I’m glad I missed that segment, it would have just awakened the rage I felt after spending a couple hours reading this. It’s just not worth the time or energy.
I read his first book last year, and I really enjoyed it. While it did have a lot of material from his act, it’s not full of disdain for lots of things. It’s all about his family and he really loves being a dad and it shows. It was interesting to get this look inside his life. I don’t know if that would make you change your mind about reading it (and I don’t really care, actually), I just thought I’d throw this out there.
