Pusheen is my spirit animal.

January 30, 2015 by soapyme Leave a Comment

71PwztJ25ILIf you’ve been on the internet at all, you’ve probably seen Pusheen in one form or another. She has a blog, a set of Facebook stickers, and a bunch of merch at online indie shops. If you’re already a fan, you will get most of your favorite comics in one book. And if you’re a newbie, hopefully you will be inspired to check out her tumblr.

My darling BFF and I had a belated Christmas gift exchange. This is what she got me, minus the chocolate. I’ve already eaten that.

I have one cat, and in her mind that makes me a crazy cat lady. :P

Pusheen is simply adorable. She’s just this big squishy marshmallow of a kitty who lives life to the fullest, eating and getting into trouble when she’s not sleeping. Just looking at Pusheen makes me happy.

As you see, web-Pusheen has a mesmerizing bounciness that does get lost in print. But the book is still one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen, full of cat-wisdom. Claire Belton could have gone the easy route and reused her old comics, but she put in a lot of new material. (Also, there were probably some copyright issues.) Some of the jokes do fall flat for me; there is one section called “DinoCats,” and it’s – surprise – Pusheen reimagined as various dinosaurs with punny names. My favorites are more the more oddball comics like “Which superpower would you choose?” and “Cat Wizards,” which are subtler riffs on the traditional “aren’t cats weird?” joke.

But honestly, how do I review a book like this? It delivers exactly what the cover promises. Ask for cute cat illustrations, and ye shall receive. If you don’t crack a smile at least once, you are either heartless or have a severe dislike of cats. In which case, why did you pick it up?!
