This dragon sure ain’t Pete’s (and that’s a good thing!)

February 7, 2015 by katie71483 7 Comments

If you’re of a certain age, I’m going to assume that you saw the Disney movie Pete’s Dragon at some point in your childhood. Here’s a visual reminder in case you need one:

petes dragon

In Dragon Bound, Thea Harrison has created the complete antithesis of Pete’s invisible dragon pal in the hero, Dragos. Dragos has been around since the dawn of time and is a complete bad ass. He is not rotund with purple hair and fond of small children. Instead he is the leader of all Wyr kind, a prime physical specimen, an amazing warrior, and an OCD hoarder of epic proportions. (The Wyr are one of the Elder Races. They can appear as human or creature.)

dragon boundPia has an ex who is bad news. In a moment of loneliness, she shared a secret with him – she is a half-breed wyr and can get past any lock, whether it’s a safe or a cell or handcuffs. She also glows unless she is using a dampening spell learned from her mother to help her mix more easily with humans. Needless to say, her ex is into deep gambling debt with people you don’t want to borrow money from and brags that his girlfriend can steal anything with her special gift. As a result, he blackmails her into stealing something (anything!) from Dragos so he can get the money boys from Jersey off of his back. I guess even in an alternate New York City, you don’t want to be into the Jersey boys for a debt if you can avoid it.

What Pia steals and Dragos’s reaction is a meet cute of epic proportions. I can’t really go into anymore detail without giving too much away, but this book is a delight from beginning to end. Dragon Bound has a brave and valiant hero who is only a tad grumpy and grunty, and a feisty heroine that is just trying to get by, with a secret that I feel stupid for not figuring out sooner.

*Name Redacted* sent me this novel as an apology for the Kristen Ashley fiasco(s). After this, she is completely forgiven and I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the Elder Races series.

Edited to add: Thea’s cool factor just went up by a million bajillion times. Her last tweet involved Courtney Milan! Screenshot_2015-02-07-19-55-25~2

A pop culture junkie, Katie's addiction to tragically bad romance novels is managed and supervised by Cricket, a 20lb. terrier mix. In addition, Katie is resolute in her belief that Evans is #BestChris and doesn't understand why people live where it snows. That shit is terrifying. View katie71483's reviews»

Having just looked through all the archives for Vaginal Fantasy, I’ve been able to ascertain that this isn’t the paranormal dragon romance they read which really didn’t seem very good. I’m adding it to my TBR list, because it sounds like it has several things that are my catnip. See, it’s a great thing that you’re still reviewing!

I have a complicated love/hate relationship with books like these but based on the strong review I’m jumping in!

I’m halfway through the book right now, and enjoying it immensly. Is Pia’s wyr-identity a unicorn? Is that why she’s so unique? Also, the having to burn the blood bit gave me super strong Kate Daniels vibes. Is she Kate’s unknown sister? That would be the best twist EVER. :D

Malin! To answer either of those questions could be spoiler-y. ;)
