Secrets Are Bad,Yo

March 7, 2015 by Melina 3 Comments

imageWell, Liane Moriarty finally burned me. Of the three books that I’ve read by her, this one had me saying, “No, no human being would make those decisions!” And then I’d growl at my screen and worry my husband who was trying to sleep because I just wasn’t happy that I was stuck reading this book.  There’s very little that can actually be said about the book’s plot that wouldn’t give it all away so I’ll be vague. A woman finds out that her husband has a terrible secret, that secret sets other secrets and other motivations into motion.

If you’ve read Tom Perrotta’s Little Children, you may remember the palpable feel that something was going to come to a head after a slow burn, but once the fuse had been lit, there was no turning back. This book has the same feel but instead of a great big explosion, it was a giant explosion of “meh”…yeah bad things happen, but no one reacts how I would expect them to react. Maybe it’s me? I don’t know, but I do know that I would never recommend this book to anyone even though I’ve been dutifully reading Ms. Moriarty’s work semi religiously for the past few months. Sorry I can’t go into further detail, but to reveal one plot point would hint too much at all the others. The book is predictable, the plot unoriginal, however, how most of the characters deal with the secrets and lies seems (to me) to be idiotic and therefore, highly original!

As a four time participant and the time Cannonball Read failure, I stand before you ready to kick ass, read books and somehow keep my children clean and sign their homework books daily (well that's never going to happen, so let's hope I can at least read 52 books this year). Teacher of 160 seniors, mom of 3 kids/ two dogs, and wife to one pretty great husband. I need a nap and some Calgon (substitute Calgon with rum) so that I can rinse and repeat this insanity on a daily basis. View Melina's reviews»

Oh, man, I don’t think I should’ve read this review. I’m somewhere in chapter 2 only and have really enjoyed the pace. Still, I’m gonna truck through, hope it’s worth the time, and eventually get to Big Little Lies!

Oh it really wasn’t “bad”…I think it was just that I enjoyed Big Little Lies and What Alice Forgot so much more. I probably wasn’t fair to it.

Well, even if it was lackluster, happy quarter cannonball!
