This pill isn’t jagged, and it certainly doesn’t need a spoonful of sugar to go down

Rennie, the main character in Stacey Kade’s Bitter Pill, has come to a crossroad in her life. After her husband leaves her, she decides to move back to the small town where she grew up, and in fact resides in the apartment above her mother’s garage. Rennie is smart, funny, and still crushing on Jake Bristol, the boy she loved in high school, the married local sheriff. She really wants to know how she wound up back where she started.

bitterpillTo supplement her alimony payments, Rennie is writing free lance for the tiny local paper. It is in this capacity that she continues to have run-ins with Jake, and in fact has just discovered the body of the local pharmacist after he has been murdered. Her editor is thrilled – she’ll have the opportunity to do pieces that will really add to the circulation. Jake is less thrilled – Rennie is constantly getting herself into trouble of this nature. Of course they investigate together and grow closer.

The ending of Bitter Pill is actually one of my favorite things about it – I’m not going to say anything spoilery beyond this: it was completely unexpected. I’m not sure if it should be classified as a mystery or a romance, but you should definitely give this book a try. It’s only $2.99 for your Kindle right now. Stacey Kade self-published this one; let’s support an author who can actually write when so much of what is self-published is laughably bad.

Disclaimer: Stacey is a friend of mine, so I may be a tad biased. If you’re interested, you can follow her on Twitter at @StaceyKade or on Facebook. She’s excellent about interacting with fans or sharing her experiences as a writer.

A pop culture junkie, Katie's addiction to tragically bad romance novels is managed and supervised by Cricket, a 20lb. terrier mix. In addition, Katie is resolute in her belief that Evans is #BestChris and doesn't understand why people live where it snows. That shit is terrifying. View katie71483's reviews»
