Guess who’s back

May 1, 2015 by Travis_J_Smith 4 Comments

For those wondering where I’ve been, I was consumed by a game called League of Legends. See, I’m currently at the lowest rank possible (Bronze V), and the players you’re matched with and against, as well as the ease with which you can move up, are all based upon an invisible rating called MMR (Match Making Rating). My MMR is in the crapper, as I was horrid at this game when I first started last year, which means climbing the ladder is proving next to impossible; however, that hasn’t stopped me from investing way too much time in playing ranked matches and just trying to improve in all facets of the game.
As a result, reading fell completely by the wayside. I finished Ghost World way back on February 25th and didn’t finish another book until I remembered earlier this week that I’d started but not finished a re-read of Mother Night and decided I ought to complete that, at least. I aim to get back to reading with some regularity, already having requested some books from the library (The Declaration, The Essential Calvin and Hobbes, Then We Came to the End, A Man Called Ove), except we’ll have to wait and see if that actually comes to fruition or not.

I mean, I also bought a PS3, 6 games (Arkham Asylum, BioShock, Advanced Warfare, Far Cry 3, The Last of Us, and Little Big Planet), and the complete series of Breaking Bad (the blu-ray barrel) with part of my tax refund, yet outside of watching the entirety of Breaking Bad again (the first show I’ve ever really done that with) on my new PS3, the rest of those purchases have been left to collect dust to this point. I haven’t finished even a single one of those games, though I did get far enough into The Last of Us to determine it wasn’t for me, think I might be far enough into Arkham Asylum to say the same thing, am partways through Far Cry 3, and was holding off on Advanced Warfare until I got the Titan One, which lets you use a mouse and keyboard for controls (I hate dual analog for shooters).

We’re going to try, though, because at the very least I want to keep up my Cannonball streak. I most certainly won’t win this year’s Cannonball Read, or reach anything like those Double, Triple, Quadruple Cannonballs of years past, but 52 is still in reach as, according to Goodreads, I’m still on track with 17 out of 52 books read. Anyway, without further adieu, here are the reviews I wrote up prior to going into League of Legends inspired seclusion and just never posted here (unless posts of mine aren’t showing up for me). The italicized ones are re-reads.

#8: A Gronking to Remember by Lacey Noonan: 4 stars.

#9: George’s Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl: 1 star.*

#10: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller: 2 stars.

#11: Watchmen by Alan Moore: 5 stars.
*Remember the hate parade I threw for Dahl’s other book, Danny the Champion of the World? My outrage with this one was rather similar.

Glad to see you around these parts again, Travis! I’m sure you can get to 52 if not further. Janniethestrange has taken your lead from last year and is up to 81 already. It’s a banner Cannonball Read – and I’m thankful for every one of you. :D

I was *just* thinking you were among the missing when I preordered Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On. Now off to read your reviews. :)

I just pre-ordered that the other day. Kept forgetting to do it, and forgot that it was so far away too. For some reason I was thinking it came out in the summer.
