Instruction Manual with No Instructions

Caitlin Moran’s How to Be a Woman is definitely one of the funnier memoirs I’ve read. I’m not so sure about some of her advice/opinions, but as she herself states, it’s possible to admire someone even if you don’t agree with 100% of what they say.

“What is feminism? Simply the belief that women should be as free as men, however nuts, dim, deluded, badly dressed, fat, receding, lazy and smug they might be. Are you a feminist? Hahaha. Of course you are.”

“So here is the quick way of working out if you’re a feminist. Put your hand in your pants.
a) Do you have a vagina? and
b) Do you want to be in charge of it?
If you said ‘yes’ to both, then congratulations! You’re a feminist.”

Moran goes into her own background — raised in a very large (both in teams of “numerous family members” and “very overweight”) family without a lot of money, or education about things like sex and menstruation. She and her siblings figured out a lot for themselves, usually in hysterical ways.

Then she discusses feminism — her ideas about it, her role models, how it should be implemented, etc. Like I said, I didn’t agree with everything she says — but she says it in a funny, interesting way and I really enjoyed reading about it.
