‘Snowball: Chronicles of a Wererabbit’ is a story of a white-haired wererabbit as she grows up and learns the dangers of the world around her.

The story begins with the rescue of baby Snowball, following her rescuer as he takes care of her and waits for her to shift into human form. This development takes a bit of time and while I was intrigued by the story and very much enjoyed the gentle sense of humour during this part, I was thrilled when Snow started to grow up and shift more. In the second part of the story Snow’s parts are written in first person and this is where it became more emotionally involving for me. Her story is a difficult one, as she doesn’t really fit in with humans and she must hide her abilities from them as she could put herself in danger if anyone was to find out what she is.

There were some nicely touching moments between father and daughter; their relationship was believable and sweet. I really grew to love all of the main characters, with their little quirks and the easy banter within the family unit. The science behind the supernatural elements was refreshingly different. I liked the explanation for the process of shifting and I enjoyed the geeky humour linked to it too. The story started out slow, but with a hint of impending threat. Dangers popped up a few times throughout, in various guises, but it wasn’t until close to the end the threat really got serious for the heroine. A few developments towards the end really amped up the tension and the ending was pitch-perfect. I can’t wait for the next book!

This story takes the reader on a wonderful journey, with amazing characters and emotional highs and lows that make for a thoroughly captivating read. I highly recommend this book to lovers of YA fantasy and paranormal.
