And now I’m done with Liane Moriarty’s entire catalog of books.
The Last Anniversary is similar to most of Moriarty’s books; there is a mystery that ties a group of people together and is pieced together through various points of view. In this case we have the mystery of the Munro baby; Alice & Jack Munro abandoned their house and child in 1932, the infant was found by Rose and Connie Doughty who raise the child and capitalize on the mystery for the next 73 years.
In the present, Sophie Honeywell receives a phone call from her ex almost-fiance; Thomas, the grandson of the infamous Munro Baby, has news of Connie’s death and her decision to leave Sophie her house on Scribbly Gum Island. Sophie is absorbed into the family and begins spending time with Grace, another Munro Baby grandchild, who is suffering with some personal issues related to her marriage and new baby. Another granddaughter, Veronika, is set on solving the mystery on her own and is deeply upset that a non family member was given her aunt’s house.
This one had a lot of family drama, like Three Wishes. Unfortunately there were quite a few extraneous story lines, like Thomas and Veronika’s mother’s weight loss journey, that didn’t move anything forward. The mystery on this one was good though, I admit I only got 85% of this one figured out before the big reveal.
