She’s All Brute Force and 90s Cliches

October 6, 2015 by ModernLove 17 Comments

Forgive me readers, for I have sinned. For a few moments, I let doubt enter my mind. I worried about this book. What if this was just some Potter-rip off? What if it was trite, derivative? What if my hopes were too high, my expectations were too great? What if I was disappointed? Well, gentle readers, I am a grown woman and I can admit when I was wrong: THIS BOOK IS FRIGGIN AWESOME. (Yes, I read a 526 page book over the course of about six hours. Don’t judge me.) (Also, very mild spoilers.) (And the title of this book comes from my favorite line, not my opinion of it and/or Rowell.)

Yay! I’m glad you loved it! I’m trying to put it off as long as possible in order to save up all of the awesomeness!

You are a much better (and more patient) person than I am. I have a feeling this will be re-read before the year is over, though.

I love everything about this. I love that you give it 5 stars. I love that you sat down and read it all on the first day. And I love that you put aside the time to tell us all not to worry. Thank you!

I love that I have a really chill job that doesn’t care if I bury my nose in a book! I hope you love it, too.

I requested this at the library almost 3 weeks ago and was the 18th person to do so… glad to know the wait will be worth it whenever I’m able to get my hands on it!

I hope they got enough copies to make the list go fast! I really enjoyed it, so I’m hoping everyone else does, too.

I had completely forgotten that I pre-ordered this ages ago when I got an e-mail saying it was available yesterday. Unfortunately, while last week was a wonderful haven of reading and relaxation, work is now back with a vengeance and I’ve only been able to start the book on the train on my way to work this morning. I have therefore not read your full review (as I want to avoid spoilers). I’m so glad to see you loved it, I’ve been desperately trying not to read during my breaks as I would get NOTHING done. What little I’ve read has hooked me well and truly.

Mild as they are, I respect that. Sometimes it’s more fun to have little to know idea what’s coming, even if you can kind of tell already, because it’s just more fun. I hate that stopping-starting thing, when you just want to dive in and devour is, so I feel your pain. I hope you find more time!

I just finished the book and I loved it! This is clearly going to be in my top 10 for 2015. Now I’ve read your review and to me, this book wasn’t missing a thing. I love Rainbow Rowell’s books (the lowest I’ve ever rated any of her books is 4.5 stars) and I love good fantasy and it turns out that the two combined is a thing of pure amazing awesome and I’m so happy I feel like I’m radiating right now. This exceeded my wildest expectations.

Yeah, the “‘missing”-ness is such a personal thing to me and I can see how other people won’t find that. But goddamn this is a jewel of a book. I’m spending the weekend sick on the couch and there’s a good chance I’m going to reread this.

I spent the trip to work today skim-reading all my favourite parts (ok, the kissing parts) of the last third. I think I need to re-read it this weekend too, then read Fangirl again.

I was so happy when this book arrived on my doorstop yesterday, but alas, I DON’T ACTUALLY HAVE TIME TO READ IT JUST NOW. Which, is killing me. Maybe I’ll save it? Maybe I’ll read it in a mad dash next week? I just don’t know…

Solution: don’t sleep! Who really needs it, anyway? Just read instead. It’s much more fulfilling.

Yay! Glad to hear this one’s good. Wasn’t sure what to think of it, but I love everything she does so I was hoping for awesomeness.
