I’m So Very Glad I Don’t Have to Date

November 30, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 1 Comment

I got this on a Kindle deal on Amazon – otherwise I probably would never have had occasion to read this book. As a married person, I don’t do a whole lot of dating. In fact, the whole concept terrifies me. Reading this book didn’t help much with that, but I can still say that I enjoyed it.

Ansari teamed up with Eric Klienenberg, a sociologist who may also be an authority on the single life, to explore the vagaries of dating in this world full of technology. Me, personally, I met my husband the old fashioned way: in a bar. I think we may have had flip phones, but for the most part if you wanted to talk to someone you had to call them at home. Now people are available to each other all the time. Back then, if you didn’t hear from someone right away, you figured it was because they weren’t home yet. Now, if someone doesn’t text you back within a few minutes, you completely freak out. Or maybe that’s just me.

Ansari’s book is funny and informative, without being didactic, which is a good combo. It’s also smart, and it once again made me glad that I’m not currently out there. Although if my husband keeps making those awful noises when he chews food, I may be out there sooner than I thought.
