Elizabeth Woodville, the daughter of Jaquetta of Luxemborg, was married to Sir John Grey, until he was killed in battle. King Edward IV sees her, they meet, and fall in love. They get married in secret, leading the rest of the world (England) to wonder if there was some sorcery at work. People are pretty resentful of this beautiful nobody being raised to be queen, and mother of the heirs to the throne. Lots of intrigue and counter-intrigue, of course.
Things go horribly when Edward dies, and there is all the fighting to see who will end up on the throne (her sons are a bit young to be king). And then their uncle Richard (and some others) take the boys to the Tower. For safekeeping, pre-ordination, of course. Yeah, right. The boys were never seen again.
I’m way behind, I read this book ages ago, and it’s difficult to remember everything I read. It’s another standard Philippa Gregory book, and if you like those, you’ll like this.
