Amazon had a deal on this book not long ago, and I jumped on it because I’d been dying to read it, but didn’t want to pay full price (I have a mental block with that – I just feel like if I’m reading a book on my kindle, it shouldn’t cost very much). And of course I heard about the deal from the authors’ website Go Fug Yourself, which I visit at least once a day. I have enjoyed the ladies’ writing about fashion and entertainment (and the royals, of course) for a long time. I always feel good when I agree with their opinions about people’s clothing. Makes me feel like I know what I’m talking about.
If you read their website, you know the authors are a little tiny bit interested in Prince William and Kate Middleton, and they have a passing interest in Prince Harry as well. It makes sense, then, that their first book for grownups would be a very thinly-veiled retelling of the Wills and Kate story, sort of.
Bex is an American student studying in England, and the first person she meets happens to be the heir to the throne, living in college digs on the semi-downlow. They become friends, along with the usual cast of characters (the swot, the party girl, the weirdo, etc.), and then they fall in love, just like they should. Complications arise, since Bex is a commoner, an American, and just generally not very suitable. There are misunderstandings, break ups, make ups, and all the usual things you’d expect in a modern romance.
There is absolutely no new ground being trod here, but that really doesn’t matter. The Fug Girls’ writing style, and their obvious affection for their subjects (and subject matter) makes this an enjoyable read – perfect for curling up under a comfy blanket with a nice cup of tea.
I read this book over the summer and devoured it in an inappropriately short amount of time. It was a lot of fun to read.
