The Last of the Marples

December 31, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 1 Comment

Cannonball! And, oof. I should have been done with this months ago, but I’m such a lazy reviewer. I put things off, because I want each review to be brilliant, but then all that happens is that I get behind, and everything I write is crap.

And Agatha Christie deserves better than that. I thought I had reviewed this 11th book in the Marple series before I started the Marple-a-thon, but apparently I was wrong. So this is a good way to end the 2015 CBR7. Perhaps for CBR8, I’ll have a Poirot-a-thon.

Anyway, Miss Marple’s lovely nephew has paid for her to have a holiday in London. She chooses Bertram’s Hotel, which is a throwback to Edwardian and Victorian times, and it’s the last place that serves proper muffins with tea. She used to go there when she was younger, and it hasn’t changed a bit. Bertram’s caters to the old pussies (as Christie calls them) and foreigners looking for something authentically British.

But then a clergyman goes missing, robberies happen, and there’s a murder (of course there is). Miss Marple does her usual watching and thinking, and clues Chief Inspector Davy in on her observations. He recognizes her genius (as all smart coppers do) and they work together to figure out what’s rotten at Bertram’s Hotel.

I will be going back and re-reading these the rest of my life. There’s a reason Agatha Christie is one of the most widely published and read author. And what better way to end my Cannonball this year?

Thanks for everything, see you next year!
