If the Ghostbusters worked for the FBI

February 11, 2016 by Even Stevens Leave a Comment

Harmony BlackHarmony Black is a by-the-book FBI agent. She’s also a witch. For years she has worked special cases – ones that involve things that normal people would never accept nor believe. Finally she has gotten a break and taken a much needed vacation, only to get called back in for an emergency case. This time, Harmony is to work with a group of other special agents (known as the Circus) to take down the Bogeyman, a being that abducts children and one Harmony knows all about, as she witnessed (and named) the Bogeyman take her baby sister, Angie, when she was just a kid. So this time, it’s personal. Yeeeeeeeeeeah!

Ahem. Sorry. Couldn’t help myself there.

To get right to the point, this book is fun as hell. There is a lot of plot driven action going on, and it is pretty much non-stop throughout the book. We get a good sense of Harmony’s character through her narrative but also from the link between her current case and the events of her past. She’s a good character, and avoids a lot of the stereotypes that would be easy to fall back on when characterizing someone as a straight arrow. She has her reasons for her methods, but she’s not rigid or sanctimonious about those reasons. Her teammates are fun, especially her new partner Jessie who revels in her abilities (most of the time, anyway). I loved the story and the characters enough that immediately upon finishing the book I went onto Amazon and pre-ordered the next one.

If you’ve ever read The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, it reminds me a lot of that book in structure, pace and theme. If you haven’t read it, you should read that right after you read this! If you like fantasy, paranormal, and lots of action, you won’t be disappointed with this book.
