As previously mentioned in my Agent of the Empire reviews, I’m not much of a Star Wars guy, but I do enjoy the universe. It lends itself to telling all kinds of stories. For example, Agent of the Empire (Dark Horse) used a galaxy far, far away to tell James Bond stories well. Charles Soule’s (She-Hulk, Letter 44, Superman Wonderwoman etc. etc. etc.) Lando is another great example of how the larger Star Wars ‘verse can be used to tell smaller, genre-ish stories. This is a heist story and a story about friends. You don’t have to know anything about the movies or the IP to appreciate it for what it is. You’ll get it if you don’t know a Twi’lek from a parsec. If you do understand the broader context, though, you’ll appreciate the story on another level.
In short, Lando and his buddies have got their hands on a big-time heist, and it turns out that they may have bit off a bit more than they can chew. Sexy, wisecracking hijinks in space ensue. Even off the charts charm can’t always satisfy the Empire…or can it? Visually, Lando is a very appealing book. It shares its color scheme with Marvel’s recent Cyclops run (also a fun space jaunt) and possibly Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s bright, it’s fun, it’s classic Billy Dee Williams. Who doesn’t want more classic Billy Dee Williams in their world? I know I do. It has a sketchish quality about it that lends itself well to action and expression. This one is pretty enough to appreciate in print, and it’s only like $12.50 on Amazon.
If you like charming rogues and/or Star Wars, buy this book.
