The Downside to being a Soul Sucker is No Kissing (Except Demons)

February 26, 2016 by Andrea Krieter Leave a Comment

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Summary: Layla is a half-demon, half-warden (gargoyle) and she can see souls. Not only that, but if she were to kiss someone with a soul, she would basically eat it. Layla doesn’t know who her parents are and was taken in by the Wardens, “the good guys”, who protect the human race from demons. She loves her family, especially Zayne, but any relationship would be doomed from the start. Then she meets Roth. Roth is hilarious, sexy, dangerous, cynical, and also a demon, but that doesn’t stop the spark of attraction from flaring between the two of them. Layla discovers he’s here to protect her, because Layla is special and Hell wants her.

I didn’t think I was going to like this book, because the relationship thing with Zayne made me want to roll my eyes until they popped out of my head. However, I fell in love with Roth the minute I met him. There was something about him that made me like him. It might have been how he was always pushing Layla’s buttons and making her slightly uncomfortable with his flirting. But at the same time, he was an incredibly nice and caring demon, which seems super contradictory.

The plot line was fascinating. Layla’s ability to “tag” demons was a major element and it was interesting at how much she clung to it, enough though she herself is half demon. Sometimes, I wanted to smack her, because she was being dumb, but when you’re raised believing one thing, I guess it can be kind of hard to change.

I would recommend giving this book a chance. I ended up liking it and I really want to know what happens next. I need to know things about Roth!
